Spam, Spam and more Spam

So... you just received a piece of Spam. But, it implies something important. Here's a hint : don't fall for it. I have seen it happen to far too many good ( yet gullible ) people.
Here's a recent one that I received in my work e-mail, which I had a great laugh at.
( Due to a lot of bad grammar and conflicting information )

From: federal bureau intelligence
Subject: "F.B.I INVESTIGATION...REPLY URGENT"

state of mind and health. The Federal bureau of
investigation (FBI) Washington,D.C in conjunction with
some other relevant Investigative Agencies here in the
United states of America have recently been informed
through our Global intelligence monitoring network
that you presently have a FUND transaction going on
with a Bank regarding to an over-due Inheritance /

time in screening through this whole transaction as

BERWALD and MR. PATRICK OWEN along with some of other
top officials of the BANK regarding your case and they
made us to understand that your file has been held in
abase pending when you personally file for your
claims. They intimated him that the only problem they
are facing right now is that some unscrupulous element
are using this project as an avenue to scam innocent
people off their hard earned money by impersonating to
be STAFF OF FIBI BANK and its affiliates.

We were also made to understand that a lady with name
Mrs.Joan C.Bailey from Ohio, United Of America has
already contacted them and also presented to them all
the necessary documentations evidencing your claim
purported to have been signed personally by you prior
to the release of your funds to her, though they
insisted on hearing from you personally before they
could go ahead on wiring the funds to the Bank
information provided by the above named Lady. It is
basically one of the main reasons why they contacted
us, to enable us assist them in carrying out proper
investigation and subsequently informing you of their
mandate to Remitting your funds.

Most importnatly, We advise that you discontinue
further dealings with any person or organization
posing as staff or affiliate of FIBI BANK, or any
other Bank/agency concerning the transfer of your
funds. In your own interest, You are advised to
immediately contact FIBI BANK UK on the following
details for the onward remittance of your funds.

PS - I especially love the switch between Federal Bureau of Investigation, and federal bureau intelligence.
Definitely seems legit. I should just forward off all my banking information now, right?

Open Source and More

Hey Y'all...
Just some tidbits on the Open Source Movement... and some other great things that could help you find what you need, and avoid piracy on the flipside.

First off, Open Source is software that is not only free to the public, but also provides the source code if needed, and you are openly permitted to modify it as needed ( within certain limits of course ) For a further definition... check this out.

Wikipedia maintains a great list of Open Source Software - and, typical to Wikipedia... it is very well organized.
They also maintain a great list of Open Source Games

On the topic of Open Source Games... here is a bit more extensive list. Lots of great fun. :-D

While not quite Open Source... here is a list of Applications on their Online Alternatives. Comes in handy if you aren't near your home PC and need to get something done.

That's all for now, eh. :-D

Ubuntu. Gotta Love It.

There are several reasons why I would reccomend Ubuntu as a good Linux OS for beginners.
I know there are many people out there who would argue with me, but I'm just putting down my 2 bits.

1 - Currently running at over 8 million users worldwide ( and counting ). The more people out there using it, the faster everything is going to be developed for it. I've been keeping an eye on the project for some time, and it's been coming along quite nicely. Massive online forums (http://ubuntuforums.org come in very handy to help troubleshoot any issue you run across)

2 - Ubuntu, being based on Debian Linux... can connect to a massive online database of applications using either a command line (advanced users) or one of the pre-installed package managers (novice users) A few quick clicks, and you can have the software that you want.

3 - FREE CD's. All you have to do is go online to to Ubuntu's Web Site and you can submit a request to be shipped CD's. (Something I do everytime a new release comes out) There is a slight delay of 4-6 weeks, but it's nice to have a hard copy kicking around. One that isn't plastered in permanent marker at least.

4 - Truly Open Source. This does cause some issues with compatibility out of the box, here in the Americas at least... but for countries with differing or stricter copyright laws than ourselves, it can come in handy. Fully functioning and Legal OS straight from install forward.

All in all, a definite competitor in both the desktop and server department. As every day goes on, it becomes easier to use, more manageable, and more configurable than most any desktop that's currently on the market. Give it another year, and it will be something to compete quite well in the alternative OS market.
